Virtual Currency Investigators' Course

The use of virtual currencies is rapidly increasing, but where do you begin when trying to investigate them? Does this responsibility lie with the Cyber Crime unit or the Economic Crime unit? Would you know how to seize virtual currencies securely and which legislation to use? Do you understand the risks associated with retaining virtual assets?

The course provides participants with recent investigation experience and examples, practical demonstrations using Chainalysis software and the use of a virtual currency ATM.  This course aims to give all participants a non-technical experience and to provide them with the required tools, knowledge and understanding to confidently prepare for and investigate, seize, retain and realise virtual assets such as virtual currencies.

Understanding of:

  • Common terminologies such as Bitcoin, blockchain, wallets, private keys, recovery seeds, mining, hashing, cryptography, hard/soft storage etc.
  • Chainalysis Reactor Software – our certified Chainalysis trainers will provide a full walk through of the Chainalysis software and how it can be used for investigations.
  • Virtual currency ATMs – using our own virtual currency ATM, participants will understand how they work and how to start investigating them.
  • Methodology and typology - how criminals are utilising virtual currencies and Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) to launder criminal property.
  • How to identify, seize, retain and eventually realise virtual currencies using the current legislation.
  • How to implement policies, controls and procedures to mitigate the risks surrounding virtual currency seizures.
  • Asset management of seized virtual assets.

Attendees will:

  • Understand the concepts of clustering and identification that underpin the Reactor software.
  • Navigate Reactor’s main features
  • Conduct analysis of different clusters and create user friendly graphs to aid understanding.

Session Three

Introduction to the types of virtual currency investigations the attendees will likely encounter and how to achieve best evidence when it comes to investigating virtual assets.

Attendees will gain a full understanding of the process to be undertaken when recovering virtual currency, which will include legislative guide, the physical process, the movement and storage whilst under LEA control, recording communications and realisation of those assets.
